Resident Joyce has been a member of Hawthorn Football Club (HFC) for over 81 years. So, when the club rang and told the Estia Health Yarra Valley team they would like to arrange a day for Joyce to meet with the Captain Ben McEvoy…they said ‘yes please!’
Joyce took her daughter and two of her great grandchildren with her as well as some employees from the home. The first stop was the museum where Joyce got to meet up with long-time friend Peter, who runs the HFC museum.
There she received their new book 1971 The Year – it was presented by Will Day, whose grandfather played in the 1971 team.
Everyone was then taken to the Board room where they watched the team training and on the table were cupcakes in Hawthorn colours in the shape of 102! Once training finished players and employees came up to meet Joyce and wish her a happy birthday.
She was thrilled and while there, a media crew interviewed Joyce about her 102nd birthday experience. She returned home, where the team put on a birthday High Tea. Joyce was extremely thankful, if a little tired!
