At Estia Health Flagstaff Hill, we consider ourselves lucky to have Barry as a resident. Barry is a warm and friendly person, whose love for art brings joy to our home. While a relatively new member of our community, Barry has quickly become a special part of Our Family.
From a young age, Barry quickly discovered his love for art. For over 80 years, it has been more than just a hobby; it has been part of his identity. With a particular love for pastels and a newfound passion for acrylic painting, Barry has exhibited his artwork in numerous galleries, showcasing his talent and creativity. His background in interior design and sign writing has given him remarkable brushwork skills, which he passionately refines every day.
Barry believes it’s important to leave a mark on the world, sharing, “I promise myself when I leave this earth, I’ll leave a mark…leave an impression that my family thinks is valuable. If I can give back to the community doing something that is worth it…I’ve done my job.” This desire to create something meaningful motivates him to keep growing as an artist and share his art with others.
Inspiring others through teaching
Every Tuesday afternoon, Barry leads an art class for our residents at Flagstaff Hill. His enthusiasm for art is contagious, creating a welcoming space where participants can explore their creativity without fear of judgment. In Barry’s classes, art is a shared experience, believing that the process of creating together enhances both the artwork and the connections formed among participants.
Valuing the collaborative spirit of art, Barry says, “Art and socialisation go hand-in-hand, and the combining of both is something I deeply value.”
Always learning
Barry’s dedication to art is evident in the way he approaches his artistic practice. He spends countless hours studying colours and techniques to elevate his work. In addition to his current classes, Barry continues to embrace new learning opportunities, using both online resources and self-directed study.
Reflecting on his artistic journey, he says, "Art continues to be a major motivator in my life." Barry has dedicated significant time to drawing, much like the past masters he admires, which has built a strong foundation for creating great paintings. This passion inspires those around him to strive for their own personal growth.
