Last month, Estia Health Flagstaff Hill witnessed a rare and special occasion-the 100th birthdays of identical twins, Doris and Phylis.

Living side by side in adjoining rooms, the sisters have shared almost every moment of their lives, and this milestone was no exception.

With the help of our team and their families, a semi-surprise celebration was thoughtfully planned in the weeks leading up to their big day. While Doris and Phyllis had a sense that something special was being planned, they had no idea just how remarkable it would be.

Surrounded by three generations of their family, the Premier of South Australia, Peter Malinauskis, local MP Erin Thompson, and our dedicated team, the day was filled with joy as we celebrated not just two incredible lives, but the extraordinary bond that has connected Doris and Phyllis for a century.

A wonderful morning tea was served, and two beautiful birthday cakes were made, one for each sister. The day was complete with heartfelt speeches, a slideshow of cherished photos from their lives, and plenty of laughter.

Throughout their 100 years, Doris and Phylis have seen more than most of us can imagine-two world wars, two global pandemics, and the reign of five monarchs. “It’s mind-boggling,” they both agree, reflecting on the incredible journey they’ve shared.

The only time they were ever apart was when Phyllis moved to Port Pirie after her wedding, a separation Doris jokingly called “the end of the world.” Yet even that couldn’t keep them apart for long. Until three years ago, they lived independently just a few houses apart, and now, at Estia Health, they enjoy the comfort of living just a step away from each other.

When asked what they treasure most about one another, the answer is simple: “Just being together.” As for their secret to a long and happy life? “Be happy and make the most of what you’ve got.”
