Estia Health Wattle Glen proudly hosted a heartfelt book launch event for "The White Kangaroo," a charming children’s book created by the residents and team.

This unique project highlights the creativity and community spirit within Estia Health, bringing together generations to celebrate the joy of storytelling.

The event began with a warm welcome from Bindu, our Residential Aged Care Manager at Estia Health Wattle Glen, who celebrated the collective creativity and dedication that brought the book to life. Distinguished guests, including Mr. Rob Mitchell, MP Member for McEwen, and Councillor Karen Egan, Deputy Mayor of Nillumbik Shire Council, were in attendance. Mr. Mitchell praised the residents' passion and the book's heartfelt creation, while Councillor Egan expressed her excitement to share the story with her grandchildren and commended the remarkable dedication of the Estia Health Wattle Glen team. "The staff here are truly remarkable. It takes a special kind of person to provide the care and support that everyone here needs. I am really honoured to have you in my ward."

John Walker, a resident at Estia Health Wattle Glen, later shared the touching inspiration behind the book. During a scenic drive, residents frequently spotted a rare white kangaroo in the bush. Concerned for its safety due to its unique appearance, the residents, alongside our dedicated team, decided to raise awareness through a children’s book. Illustrated by residents and featuring rhyming text, The White Kangaroo aims to connect with young children in the community, promoting acceptance and the importance of protecting those who are different.

Conny, a key member of the lifestyle team, spoke about the collaborative process of creating the book. She highlighted the numerous conversations that took place, from lively discussions at dining room tables between residents to late-night chats at the nurses' stations, and the strong sense of community that shaped its development. Both residents and staff shared their joy and pride in the project, noting how it fostered a sense of togetherness and excitement within our home.

The launch event featured beautiful decorations with native flowers, themed food including white kangaroo sugar biscuits, and a baby kangaroo that delighted everyone present. Residents enjoyed a significant turnout to the launch, reflecting abundant community love and support.

Looking ahead, Wattle Glen is excited to share "The White Kangaroo" book with local childcare centres. Our residents have already made their first visit, eagerly reading the story to young children and fostering intergenerational connections. This project exemplifies the vibrant community spirit at Estia Health, highlighting our commitment to enriching the lives of our residents and the broader community.
