Residents from Estia Health Kogarah, Blakehurst and Manly Vale had the special honour of spending a meaningful day at Saint Ignatius' College Riverview, a historic Catholic boys' school in Sydney.

This visit, held on the Feast Day of Saint Ignatius, a day dedicated to students performing thoughtful acts of service to make a positive difference in the community, illustrated how acts of kindness can bridge generational gaps and foster meaningful connections.

Our ongoing collaboration with Saint Ignatius' College Riverview has deepened these connections. During the school’s Year 10 Service Week earlier this year, students visited some of our Sydney homes, where they engaged with residents through various activities, offering companionship and support. These interactions not only provided valuable assistance but also strengthened the bonds between the students and our residents, reinforcing our commitment to fostering intergenerational connections.

Upon arriving at the school’s picturesque grounds, which date back to the 1800s, our residents were greeted with warmth and enthusiasm. The Dalton House students had thoughtfully prepared the hall, setting tables and chairs, decorated with handpicked flower arrangements from the school gardens. Students kindly assisted residents to their seats, serving tea, coffee and morning tea.

The day was filled with moments of heartfelt interactions. Students and residents shared stories, laughter and playful exchanges over board games and cards. The musical talents of the students further enriched the experience, with a piano performance and rendition of "New York, New York".

Adding to the day’s enjoyment was the opportunity for residents to experience the tranquil grounds and serene rose garden, with students accompanying residents on a gentle stroll around the school. Students displayed genuine care and thoughtfulness, offering their hands and support to ensure the residents felt safe and valued.

As the visit came to an end, students gifted the residents with floral bouquets made from the arrangements on the tables, a beautiful keepsake from the day’s events. The residents were deeply touched by the kindness and generosity of the students, expressing their appreciation for the special day. One resident remarked that it was a moment she would cherish for her lifetime.

At Estia Health, we are committed to creating enriching experiences for our residents. We believe that intergenerational connections are vital for a vibrant and supportive community. These relationships not only help preserve stories and local history but also combat loneliness and instil a sense of purpose and joy in our residents. At the same time, they allow younger generations to develop empathy and a deeper understanding of the elderly.

A heartfelt thank you to Saint Ignatius' College Riverview. The memories created will be treasured by our residents forever, serving as a testament to the love and kindness shown by the students.
